Deep Roots Farm is a fifty-acre regenerative, organic farm located in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. Located in the woodlands near the Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary, the farm intersects with the Swan Point Creek, a freshwater stream that deposits into the Patuxent River. In addition to natural wonders, the production farm includes livestock, beneficial habitat zones for wildlife and wildflowers, and four fields cultivated to nurture fruit, herbs, and vegetables. Since 2020, Deep Roots Farm has continued to offer fresh produce at farmers markets in the district, as well as CSA shares to members across the DMV.
Youth are welcome to walk the grounds at Deep Roots Farm with guidance from our Field Crew Members. Field Crew Members are ready to help curious minds experience nature outside of the traditional classroom setting. These tours are designed to bring youth closer to sensory experiences, smells, sounds, and tastes that challenges their perception of nature. Season transitions reveal signs of autumn and spring in interesting ways, helping youth to better understand planting and plant needs, the science of composting, the importance of vermiculture, insects and pollinators, as well as harvesting best practices.
Families, friends, and colleagues are welcome to visit Deep Roots Farm to get a better understanding of production farming practices. Each tour is tailored to meet the needs of visiting groups, yet will all include a walking tour, Q&A opportunities, and quality time to rehydrate/replenish before exiting the property with fresh produce.
